Democrats… keep your eye on the prize

I’m not gonna lie. This never-ending White House shit storm gives me a great deal of joy. I was thrilled to see the new White House Communications Director, Anthony Scaramucci, climb up Donald Trump’s butt on national television. And in one of his first acts, the Mooch spewed his guts to Ryan Lizza, calling Reince Priebus a “fucking paranoid schizophrenic” and relaying a unique, self-pleasuring skill of Steve Bannon’s. Wounded Moochy felt betrayed when the reporter, well, reported it.

I can’t wait to see who “Saturday Night Live” enlists to portray that little slime ball! And although it’s heartbreaking to say good-bye to Melissa McCarthy’s awesome Spicey, Aidy Bryant will kill it as Sarah Honey Boo Boo Sanders!

But we can’t let these delicious distractions throw us off our game. We must learn from the Republicans who had seven years to figure out how to repeal and replace. Yet when they finally got their chance, they choked. Yes, the Affordable Care Act needs help. We’ve been asking for a bipartisan solution to repair it. So now it’s time to go to work.

The United States’ health care system placed 15th in the 2016 Best Countries ranking. The top five, all offering universal health care, are:
    1. Denmark
    2. Sweden
    3. Canada
    4. United Kingdom
    5. Germany

Senator Bernie Sanders travelled with the Prime Minister of Denmark in his home state of Vermont back in 2013 to discuss the Danish approach to health care. Bernie wrote a great piece entitled, “What can we learn from Denmark?” The following is an excerpt:

In Denmark, social policy in areas like health care, child care, education and protecting the unemployed are part of a ‘solidarity system’ that makes sure that almost no one falls into economic despair. Danes pay very high taxes, but in return enjoy a quality of life that many Americans would find hard to believe. As the ambassador mentioned, while it is difficult to become very rich in Denmark no one is allowed to be poor. The minimum wage in Denmark is about twice that of the United States and people who are totally out of the labor market or unable to care for themselves have a basic income guarantee of about $100 per day.

I think it’s fair to mention that in another study of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark ranked number one.

But God forbid we learn from foreign countries’ successes!

So what about our red, white and blue Medicare program? It’s popular. It works. Maybe Medicare for all is the answer. Maybe not, but we need to figure it out.

Look, now that Trump finally gets it, literally every single earthling knows solving health care is difficult. But the first step is for all politicians to finally see this as a fundamental, human right. And then we figure out the best system that puts patients, not profits, first and raises taxes on the rich to pay for it.

But it’s not just healthcare, we Democrats need to get our shit together within our party platform. We must return to the Paris Climate Accord. We need to take a stand on income equality, free college, gun control, ending poverty, voter rights, a woman’s right to choose and LGBT rights. The 2018 mid-terms are just 15 months away. And even though Trump is a mangled train wreck, we cannot take anything for granted. We need to re-take the House. And even the Senate.

    Okay maybe not the Senate.

But for sure the House. Not just to check and balance President Limp, but to replace Paul Ryan with a Democratic Speaker. And I’m sorry; Nancy Pelosi, it can’t be you. Don’t get me wrong, you’ve been a real gem and we owe you a lot for your huge role in passing the Affordable Care Act. But you said yourself you would’ve retired had Hillary won. And so we need you to please go.

In 15 months, if there is a God in heaven, Robert Mueller will have exposed the ugly secret(s) Trump is hiding. And he will be impeached, forced to resign, I don’t care, just leave, mother fucker. Many conservatives are rock hard for Mike Pence to take over but we can’t have that either. Pence’s 1950s view of America will ruin our country. Not to mention Mother Pence won’t let him meet alone with Angela Merkel.

My hope is that of all the dirt that’s unearthed about Trump, the illegitimacy of his win due to Russian manipulation will be at the top of the heap. And if he got there unjustly, so did his vice president.

Next in line is Speaker of the House. Remember in my dream scenario, Democrats have taken the House and Nancy has graciously stepped down. I envision Speaker John Lewis. Or maybe Keith Ellison, Jackie Speier, Elijah Cummings, Luis Gutierrez, or Ted Lieu. When Trump retires to Moscow and Pence retreats to a cornfield in Indiana, President John Lewis (sigh) will get us back on track until 2020 when we elect President Al Franken or President Kirsten Gillibrand.

Of course, a lot has to happen for my fantasy to come true. The only thing I can really count on is that Trump will continue to do idiotic things like dismiss transgender soldiers who courageously serve our country, or encourage good police to illegally rough up those in custody, or speak inappropriately to Boy Scouts.

If I may address the limp, lame and blubbery drama queen directly. God I love you, Peggy Noonan!

It doesn’t matter whether you hire John Kelly or R. Kelly as your chief of staff. You, Donald J. Trump, are the problem. You are toxic for our citizens, our country, our place in the world and our planet. And how do I know that?

Because I’m sane and you’re not.
