Abortion-Smishsmortion — an open letter to Congress

    Sen. Lindsay Graham, et al…

How noble you are for wanting to stop abortions at 20 weeks. You must feel all powerful, like a super hero waging war against the dregs of society… (You know, fertile women.)  I mean, you and your mansplaining of things like rape, real rape, forcible rape and how women shouldn’t really get to call it rape if they don’t have measurable bruising. You must feel so courageous to use your voice and pen to define human suffering and have the unique vision to empower other men like yourself at the expense of the suffering of women. Good for you. I cheer your self-aggrandizing.

Ah, but back to your bill. You want to stop abortions at 20 weeks, but you forgot a couple words in there that are really important. One is “safe.” You want to stop safe abortions. You want to stop women from working with their physicians and making safe decisions about their own bodies.

The other word you forgot is “Legal.” Abortion was Le-ga- lized so that women would stop dying from illegal abortions.

Remember how women, mothers, daughters and sisters were turning up dead from sepsis or from bleeding to death? Remember all that? You seem to have lost the baby with the bathwater on that one.

Do you want to really reduce abortion? Because even though I am not a scientist, I know how to do it. I don’t mean your mansplaining about holding aspirin between my knees. I mean real scientific knowledge based on what happens when a woman O-Vu-Lat-es and is intimate with a man. Let me help you with this.

Jesus, Mary, Mohammad, The Stork, Leprechauns or Sheela Na gig aren’t part of the baby making process. That’s just silly. A woman ovulates an egg from her ovary and it travels down the fallopian tube. If the timing is right and there is enough healthy “baby batter,” also known as sperm, to reach and penetrate the egg, the egg gets fertilized and it tries to implant in the uterus. That’s it. Whether or not the sex was good, wanted or unwanted doesn’t have anything to do with the baby batter-egg connection.  That’s science.

A lot can go right or wrong at this point. Because you aren’t a doctor, no amount of religion or mansplaining needs to be said. Leave the decisions between the woman and her doctor.

The best thing you can do, Mr. Graham, is make birth control and family planning free and trust doctors and women to make their own decisions. These are concrete solutions to unwanted pregnancy.

You can’t abort a pregnancy if it never happened.

What are you doing in your state to reduce unwanted pregnancy? What are you doing in Congress to promote birth control and family planning? I mean seriously, if you care so much about babies, are you supporting family planning? Family leave? Maternity care?  WIC?  No, instead you switched a vote on your 20 week plan and voted again to cut funding.  Really,  how many times are you going to waste time on voting for funding or voting to cut ACA?  Is that what Republicans want to be best known for?  Hating women, moving the country back 100 years and gutting healthcare for citizens? Really?

I would ask each Congress member who thinks they should strip  safe abortion from all women, “What is your motivation?”  If your motivation is to punish women, I can see voting for this Lindsay Graham bill. But if you want to support families, women, maternity care and reduce the need for abortion. You are going about it all wrong.

Bravo! I loved it. I can’t figure out why the same people that claim to hate abortion so much also oppose sex education, contraception, and family planning. It makes NO sense. When I look at Congress my only hope is that with time it’s going to get more minority and more female.

Excellent! Prevention and education are the key. This new humanity begins at conception, and yes I think it behooves us to use that term, is relatively a new banner. I do think that “healthy” abortions probably do need a limit, and do become inhuman at some point. I am a little uncomfortable maligning men controlling women’s bodies- too! A woman took my foreskin without asking, as have so many.
