    Benedict Donald

It’s pathetic watching Donald Trump’s lapdog Rudy Giuliani spouting the nonsense that “collusion isn’t a crime.” Even Trump is trying out the latest excuse for his campaign’s cooperation with Russian agents of influence. But the joke is on them. Collusion is a crime. It’s conspiracy to defraud the United States and it’s a felony. Rudy knows this, but he knows that the receptive ears from Cult 45 either won’t know this or simply won’t care.

Trump has conditioned his base to believe what they’re told. Trump once bragged that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and he wouldn’t lose any votes. I’ll go one better. He could be caught sodomizing a child in the Oval Office and his supporters would question what the little girl was wearing and, by the way, remember Bill Clinton? Hillary’s emails? Benghazi? QAnon?

The sorry thing for those of us who like our presidents uncompromised and still believe in the promise of an America out from under Vladimir Putin’s thumb is we’re not likely going to end this national nightmare anytime soon.

The likelihood is that nothing is going to be done about Trump even if Robert Mueller’s report is issued and finds him legally culpable for several crimes. Why? The Justice Department doesn’t believe it can indict a sitting president (I’d like to see them test the proposition!) and the only recourse would be to impeach and remove a president first and then prosecute him.

With the Democrats likely to take the House this fall, impeachment is a very real possibility. But removal requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate. With a Republican Party afraid to even criticize their dear leader, there is no way they’re going to vote to remove him from office. Let’s say that by some miracle he is removed, sometime before that happens, Trump will pardon everyone indicted or under suspicion by Mueller and issue a pardon for himself, which will find it’s way to his handpicked Supreme Court. Everyone walks.

The most likely scenario is a completed report, outraged Democrats, and Republicans and Cult 45 shouting, “Fake news!”, followed by an impeachment and acquittal in the Senate.

What’s left at that point? Well, barring an assassin’s bullet making America great again, the Democrats will have to mount a 2020 campaign to unseat the colluder-in-chief.

So why do we want the Mueller report if nothing will come of it? We need to document every bit of what happened in 2016 and what Donald Trump did to obstruct justice in the aftermath of it. We need to know if the president conspired with an enemy of the state to circumvent and steal a presidential election. We need to know if the Russian Federation has an agent in the Oval Office or even a useful idiot who is being blackmailed to sell out his country.

I can speculate as to what those answers are, considering we have a president attacking the special counsel in tweets and saying absolutely nothing about the current Russian assault on our democracy. No tweets about Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill’s attempted hacking. No tweets about the Facebook groups set up by foreign actors to sow chaos in our society. Nothing. We know why that is by now.

We need this information for posterity. So the Trump name goes down in history like Benedict Arnold. Benedict Donald. We need the facts to know just who sold America down the river. We need to know the names of his Republican allies who have worked alongside him to obstruct justice and hide the truth from the American people.

It would do our nation proud if Republicans stood up, found their balls and became patriots, deciding to put our country ahead of their wretched party for once. But I’m not holding my breath. Speaker Paul Ryan has been a feckless disappointment. I’m glad he’s leaving to go home and disappoint his wife rather than the nation. Mitch McConnell is one of the architects of discord in America and history will show him to be the unprincipled cretin he is.

Even though I don’t believe the Republican Party will stand up to Donald Trump and Cult 45 under any conditions, I don’t think there will be passivity in the face of Republican refusal to uphold their Article I duties in the event Robert Mueller shows us clear and convincing evidence of wrongdoing. No, there’s a section of the resistance that will not stand for it. There would be mass demonstrations the likes of which this country has never seen. (Trump will appreciate that last line.) And unlike the women’s march and subsequent marches protesting various outrages perpetrated by this administration, there will be violence. Unfortunately, there will be bloodshed and cities will burn.

You can’t tell the public that you’re above the law, betray us and expect the sane people to be gaslit like Cult 45. It doesn’t work that way.

If a U.S. President has worked with the Russians to attack our democracy, he’s a traitor. And every member of Congress who has tried to help obscure the truth is also a traitor.

There’s been no witch hunt. There’s no deep state conspiracy. All there is a vile grifter beholden to Vladimir Putin who lies on a daily basis trying to hold onto power at all costs and his traitorous enablers.

Trump’s erratic tweets and behavior is driven by the fact that he knows Mueller is on no witch hunt. He knows there’s chum in the water. Trump knows that whatever he’s been hiding for the past several years is about to bubble up into the light of day. Robert Mueller and his team of investigators will deliver to the American people the one thing that Donald Trump and his Republican cohorts fear the most.

    The truth.

It doesn’t matter whether Trump’s cult believes the findings or not. The world will know the truth and the truth will drive a stake into the heart of Trumpism on the global stage. We will know the truth. Our allies will know the truth. History will know the truth. And history will rightfully attach an asterisk next to Benedict Donald’s name.

Yes, it would be more satisfying to see Trump removed from office in the face of a report that accuses him of crimes. To see everyone else who participated in advancing a Russian conspiracy against our country prosecuted and jailed would be a fitting end. But this story won’t end with jail time. Not when you have a president who gives out pardons like Watchtower tracts. It won’t end in prosecution when you have a president willing to test the proposition of pardoning himself, which he will.

You can’t shame Donald Trump. But the one thing he hates more than anything is to look like an unimportant loser. And that’s what we can give him. We can correct the record of all of his lies and show exactly what a lousy fucking president he was. We’ll make sure the history books note that he was a criminal. The accidental president. We can adorn his name with the disparagement and disrespect it deserves. His brand will be shit.

The one move we have left is to prove that the truth still matters in America.

    • Isn’t the depth and breadth of the mess we’re in simply astounding? And you hit on the key point that scares me most – Trump’s followers will excuse ANYTHING. Combine that with Russian interference, and I fear that he could actually be reelected. Can you even IMAGINE what that will be like? I shudder to think of it!!! It makes me want to figure out where else I might want to live that would be safe. New Zealand maybe? Do you suppose they’ll take American refugees? :/

Thinking of his supporters as a Cult makes it easier for me to deal with them. You’re not going to talk a cult member out of believing their leader is the second coming of Christ. They’re all in. It is scary.

I’m not leaving. They’re not chasing me out of my country.

No end in sight. It’s going to be a lot of work righting this ship once Trump takes his rightful place in the ashbin of history.

Thank you for reading. Don’t give up.

Bravo, Kelvin! You said it all. From your clever headline to the brilliant “Cult 45” to Paul Ryan going home to disappoint his wife … you made me smile through my fearful tears. Great column!

Thank you. I used to try to reach Trump supporters but it was wishful thinking.

I want the resistance to know that there are millions who see this horror show for what it is. I know sometimes it seems hopeless but we will outlast him.
