President Barack Obama and the haters

As per the Constitution, President Barack Obama was sworn in Sunday, January 20, 2013.  On Monday, Jan. 21, on the same day as the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, he will be sworn in publicly. Thank goodness it’s not Willard Mitt Romney taking the oath of office. We don’t need a president that writes off half of the country.

It’s sad that the Republican Party, which lost 93 percent of the black vote, 71 percent of the Hispanic vote and 73 percent of the Asian vote in 2012, blamed Romney’s loss on that poor 47 percent who want free stuff. Introspection isn’t their strong suit.

Colin Powell recently went on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ and said the Republican Party has a “dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party.” He went on to say “What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities.” He gave several examples pointing out the racially polarizing language of Sarah Palin and John Sununu.

The GOP’s response was swift. Self-examination? Nope. Attack Powell.

The Republican Party has been lurching rightward since Bill Clinton won the presidency in 1992 but the election of the nation’s first black President has sent the Grand Old Party off the deep end and its killing America.

The Kansas GOP House leader Mike O’Neal has come under fire for forwarding an email asking Republicans to pray for President Obama using Psalms 109. He is but the latest to forward this sick request. Some refer to it as the “Obama prayer” and it has been seen on bumper stickers and on signs at political rallies going back to 2009..

Psalms 109 includes such lines as “Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.”

Some say it’s a joke. What kind of joke is that?

The past week has seen various right wing blowhards comparing President Obama with Hitler, Stalin and other dictators for trying to pass sensible gun laws. One bellicose gun nut threatened to start shooting people in defiance of new gun laws before he walked his threat back with his tail between his legs.

Ever since Obama won in 2008, there have been right wing lies that he was coming to take your guns. In four years, even with the shooting of a congresswoman and the murder of a federal judge, the only thing the President did on guns was to make them legal to carry in national parks. And if Sandy Hook had not occurred, I’m confident he would’ve been content to leave the gun issue for a future president. But according to the nutjob narrative, Sandy Hook was just part of evil Obama’s plan.

Yes, the latest outrage vomited up by shameless right wing nutburgers who obviously don’t have the tin foil cap cinched down tight enough. Sandy Hook Truthers. There are those who actually believe the Sandy Hook shootings were a hoax perpetrated by the Obama Administration as a pretext to seize the public’s guns. There are websites and videos dedicated to this sick theory. One video has received over 11 million views! There’s even a university professor who is willing to entertain the idea.

Then we have state legislatures trying to pass laws making enforcement of federal gun laws illegal. While various sheriffs across the country are saying they will not enforce new gun laws. Hey fellas, this issue has been resolved. It’s called the Civil War. States don’t get to override the federal government. Barney Fife doesn’t get to arbitrarily overrule the feds just because he doesn’t like the law.

So President Obama takes office today with a nation divided. But instead of a nation divided over legitimate issues, we’re a nation divided between sane and insane. Republican leaders and right wing bloviators telling their dimwitted followers that the president is a tyrant like Hitler and is shredding the Constitution while they’re whipping up uneducated gun owners over the 2nd Amendment is a recipe for disaster.

The GOP has been craven, shrill, indecent and small in the past (with the exception of folks like NJ Gov. Christ Christie, former Sen. Alan Simpson, columnist David Frum and former Rep. Joe Scarborough) but now they’ve crossed the line into sheer dangerousness.

It will surprise me if President Obama makes it through the next four years without an assassination attempt given the climate. These hateful, backwards dead-enders are like the Baath Party in Iraq. These fringe Republicans see the handwriting on the wall. Minorities are growing politically and demographically and fucking their party out of existence. So they’re girding for a last stand.

Now, there are millions of decent conservatives and Republicans who don’t share the nuttiness of their vocal far right wing. The problem is they’re not growing a pair and standing up to the craziness. It’s perfectly okay to oppose the President’s policies. This is America and dissension is always welcome. But when you’re praying for someone’s death, targeting the President’s children, talking about secession, dictatorships and tyranny at a time when gun sales are at a fever pitch, that’s no longer mere democracy. It’s playing fatal footsies with sedition.

The last time this nation went at each other violently, 600,000 Americans lost their lives. Now we’re a nation of 307 million with nearly 300 million guns, sitting atop a powder keg of differences and disagreements and a whole hell of a lot of resentments. What happens when screaming at each other isn’t enough?

President Obama takes the oath at a time when our nation needs to pull together more than ever. And it’s bitterly ironic that on a day we remember a man who preached nonviolence and peace, it seems we’re light years away from both.

    • Well said Kelvin. I am sharing your thoughts.

Reading this, I felt upsurges of both nausea and dizziness before it all coalesced into tears. Everything you said is true. And how DARE they pray for such cruelty? That this man did so overtly and without shame–and now it's on bumper stickers, for godsakes… I am overwhelmed by the hate in this country right now that threatens anyone who doesn't qualify for “their” narrow definition of a “correct” human being–and as a Jew and a woman, I do not. You are also right about the moderates not growing “a pair” (male *or* female version)–if they don't take back their party, it's going to get worse…

Thank you for speaking up, however hard the message. Sometimes somebody has to just say it.
