Take a vacation, change the world: Crowdfunding campaign leads efforts in socially responsible travel

    Uncontained Life

Who says vacationers should have to choose between taking a fun trip and doing good in the world?  The ongoing indiegogo campaign for Uncontained Life, a new online resource for travel-lovers, makes this intriguing promise to its supporters: “You can change the world one vacation at a time.”  The website’s video, photo, audio, and written content aims to provide information and inspiration for socially responsible travel.

“It’s no secret that mass tourism can be overpriced, and often fails to provide unique travel experiences,” says Uncontained Life co-owner, Hillary Branman.  “But did you know mass tourism can also harm local economies and environments? Uncontained Life is dedicated to changing this pattern.  We want to show travelers how they can have a positive impact on local cultures and communities, and have a great time doing it!”

Uncontained Life’s campaign goal of $30,000 will help build the business’s website, update equipment and produce video, photo, audio, and written resources for travelers.  Co-owner Justin Baird elaborates: “Building community and teaching people how to be ‘good neighbors’ when they travel is one of Uncontained Life’s primary concerns.  That’s why we felt crowdfunding was a perfect way to launch our business.”  Contributors to the campaign, which runs through November 16, receive travel-related perks and the chance to shape the adventure by sharing recommendations and personal travel experiences.

Uncontained Life’s indiegogo campaign wants to help travelers save money, enrich their stories and better the world through socially responsible travel.  For more information and to stay up to date on the latest news from Uncontained Life visit http://igg.me/at/uncontainedlife, join our mailing list, and join our community on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr.

Given that my Darryl spends 6 months a year in Thailand (as his base — he travels further from there), this is just an honestly wonderful idea! He does contribute, though. He’s involved with a group called The Set Foundation (http://www.thaistudentcharity.org/) which funds a Thai child’s education from K to however far they want to go. He’s also played Santa Claus at a few kids’ schools there — cool beans.

I think every young adult should experience this during summer break between high school and college. I’m also curious is there is travel of this sort appropriate for taking the children. I don’t think instilling the need to contribute in a positive way to humanity can be started too young.
