    The Arithmetic of Death

    The arithmetic of death
    Is made up of straight lines
    And hard numbers.

    One hundred eighty six.
    Two hundred nineteen.
    Might as well be
    Six million.

    Lives subtracted –
    Their numbers carried
    In harsh columns,
    Where they multiply;
    A geometric progression
    Of loss
    And death.

    Murder is an irrational number
    The empty set
    Of grief to the power of
    And sadness is a
    Brittle arc,
    A broken circle
    Bisected by


    ** I wrote this in response to the kidnapping and murder of three teenagers in Israel. Their bodies were found eighteen days after they were taken. But we cannot ignore the fact that this act of senseless violence is new or limited to any particular borders. We cannot ignore the Kurdish and Nigerian families who are grieving for their own stolen children. We grieve with them all, and we pray that all will soon be returned home.

      Or the Palestinian boy found burned and murdered. The news gives us the arithmetic of murder but each lost child burns like a candle of grief in endless night time…
