Winner announced in Davis Farmers Market Cookbook contest
The Grand Prize Winner of the Davis Farmers Market Cookbook contest was announced today. One of the five weeks of winners was selected based on winning the most votes on the cookbook’s website www.davisfarmersmarketcookbook.com. Davis resident Connie Taxijco won for her entry of the dishes she cooked – Zucchini and Gruyere Gratin and Planked Salmon.
“Those recipes are a winner,” Connie said, “Everyone loves them.”
Connie originally cooked the meal with her sister for their husbands, using her sister’s book. She decided to submit photos of the finished dishes when she heard about the contest, to win her own book.
As a thank you to her friends who helped her put the word out on voting, Connie is making the Planked Salmon again for a dinner party of 16 – all voters who pushed her to victory. Connie loves the recipes in the Davis Farmers Market Cookbook, she says, for New Years Eve, she made the Pears with Blue Cheese, Walnuts and Honey.
“It’s kind of a riff on fruit and nuts after dinner European style,” she said, “the same components. After the holidays, everyone wanted a simple dessert.”
Connie will be joining coauthors Georgeanne Brennan and Ann M. Evans for a celebratory Italian lunch at the Davis-based restaurant Osteria Fasulo located in Village Homes. Connie, who graduated from UC Davis in 1974 in Textile Science, is a member of the Artery where she sells textile bowls. She has a long history with the Davis Farmers Market, and sold her bowls there a few years ago. For the past five years, Connie’s bowls have been selected to be gifted by the UC Davis Chancellor.
The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook, released in April of 2012 by Mirabelle Press, is the recipient of two national awards, one for 1st place in the 2012 Writers Digest Book Awards and the other for 1st place in Regional Cookbook category for the Indie Awards of Book Excellence.
